Pugneys Country Park - May 2021

Calder park wetlands nature reserve Crigglestone, Wakefield WF2 7BJ

The Calder Park Wetlands (also known as Calder Lagoons)

This can be found in an area to the east of the M1 motorway at Junction 39, north of Denby Dale Road (A636) and south of the River Calder (Calder & Hebble Navigation).

The land was formerly farmland and then excavated for sand and gravel, and now hosts two big lakes (the Calder Lagoons).

Pugneys Country Park is situated at the Wakefield end of the Wetlands just across Denby Dale Road (A636), opposite the Swan & Cygnet.

This is one of our favourite places to be in nature and a great way to spend a Friday early evening on the way home from work.

Lets take a walk around the reserve and take in the bird life and nature at its best.

We met the male swan on the lake who became a little protective of his territory and then we found out why.

Ivan even had his wish and saw the first swifts of the year.

One day I would like to paint one as good as this too.
